UNDER PLASTIC CONDITIONS:THE FUTURE

MEET THE ARTIST

Christto & Andrew’s images are laden with ‘blows’ of hyperrealism. They reside in one of the hot spots of Gulf Futurism – Doha – where the past and the future, the traditional and the modern are interlaced.

Over the past few decades, photography has evolved into a particular form of expression, rather than a literal recording of reality. For some, the term ‘photographer’ falls short; those are the artists who use photography only as a tool in their quest to create a visual language that is neither purely realistic, nor fictional. Take Christto & Andrew, a duo who create powerful hyperrealist expressions by merging images from different cultural and temporal dimensions. Their work is not about merely taking photographs, it is the fictitious production of a performance edited for the camera.

Christto & Andrew’s images are laden with extravagance and artificiality, where the past and the future, the traditional and the modern are interlaced. The Doha-based artistic duo produce dramatic images that reflect the conflicts that have surfaced during the dazzling transformation of the city that has flourished in a desert, on the shores of the Indian Ocean. Instead of working with conventional techniques, the artists employ production processes like gestures, starting and appropration, to explore new forms of expression in photography. These discoveries have the power to transform the way viewers engage with and interpret photography.
Puerto Rican Christto and South African Andrew emerged as a duo who adopt a rare form of symbiotic artistic production. They met while studying in Barcelona in 2009. Having previously lived in Qatar, Andrew convinced Christto to move to the Gulf state’s capital, Doha, in search of work. Formalising their partnership in 2012, Christto & Andrew opened their studio in Doha the same year. With the series, Liquid Portraits, they were featured in Foam Magazine’s 2014 Talent Issue, an annual showcase of the best up-and-coming photographers. The artists quickly gained international acclaim in contemporary photography and art circles when their photo was chosen for the cover of Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam’s popular international publication.
