THE ALCHEMIST OF COLORS

MEET THE ARTIST

Like a painter applying brushstrokes on canvas, French photographic artist, Marguerite Bornhauser, points her lens and hits the shutter button hundreds of times to unveil brand-new interpretations of the world around us.

From lavender grey to magenta, from cardinal red to Parisian blue; all the colours in the palette and all their hues… Marguerite Bornhauser’s photographs arguably contain everything in the visible light spectrum. Resembling a matryoshka doll, dozens of vivid images are born out of each frame, releasing an overflow of colours and objects in the process. Of course, there are also the personal meanings layered-on by the onlooker…

Born in 1989, Bornhauser currently lives in Paris and produces in Montreuil. The artist’s field of vision and imagination is a glimpse into the world we know, from an unfamiliar perspective. We see faces, but they could equally be of people or of fish. Details get our attention – vague details of what might be a fruit, or even a ladder. Places emerge, places we go to or lack the courage to do so - but above all, there are shadows. Lots of them. Shadows cast by objects on other objects. As Bornhauser photographs shadows, she demonstrates how colour can resonate, not only from one image to another, but also from one place or moment to another. We experience this fluidity through her photographs, but maybe this is how her eyes have perceived the outside world all her life. Photography is her personal way of seeing. After all, by definition, ‘colour’ is the wavelength of light that reflects off objects. Marguerite Bornhauser’s eyes perceive these reflections of light like no one else and this is why we are talking about her. Her work is reminiscent of an Henri Matisse painting, or the prose of some literary mastermind. The influence of her academic background in literature and journalism is strongly felt in her work.
