TAKING A BREAK with FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA

INTERVIEW

The legendary director takes us to a trip into his personal hideaways as he talks about life and cinema alongside his favourite recipe.

INTERVIEW BY HEVAL OKÇUOĞLU  PHOTOGRAPHY BY SAM CHRISTMAS

Francis Ford Coppola’s movies always invoke the same familiar conflict: psychotically believing in all the good things there are – love, genius, empathy, greatness, triumph, independ- ence, and eternal youth – while experiencing the blood, the sweat, the breakdown, tears, hallucinations and death.

What are your thoughts on global warming and the other ecological troubles our planet is faced with?

Clearly I am concerned about the warming of the climate and angry that our USA has now withdrawn from the Paris Climate Accord. There’s no question in my mind that the recent catastrophic hurricanes and fires are a result of global warming. I think scientists have been very clear and even if the evidence was not so persuasive, our earth is just too beautiful and important to take a chance that our emissions are causing the climate to change.

What new worlds did publishing a magazine open up for you that you have not experienced before?

Certainly, meeting new authors and artists and working with the team who are constantly reading and scanning for diverse people who might become a guest designer.

Can you remember any image from real life that you consider to be impossible to be expressed in film?

I can think of some images that are nearly impossible to be expressed at all, whether in cinema or anything else.
