SANDS OF TIME

MEET THE ARTIST

Beaches have been a space for inspiration and experimentation that Martin Parr has returned to throughout his career. With a selection of his photographs and this exclusive text, Parr describes his seaside fascination.

PHOTOGRAPHY AND TEXT MARTIN PARR

I love to photograph on beaches. From my early days at Manchester Polytechnic in the 1980s, shooting in the rundown resort of New Brighton just opposite Liverpool, through to a snap of a Russian on the beach in Nice, looking a bit like a mermaid last summer, to Kerala last month – the beach is a subject I keep returning to.

I also like how the beach can be an open shop for any number of souvenirs, foods and services – I could’ve had my ears de-waxed on a beach in Goa.

My favourite beach of all is probably Mar del Plata in Argentina. It is huge – 17 kilometres long – and made up of maybe 12 different beaches and 2000 hotels. It is wonderfully crazy, and the busier and crazier a resort is, the happier I am.
