Photographer and filmmaker Nadia Lee Cohen’s compositions reveal a funny, sexy and provocative reconstruction of images familiar from and unique to American film and advertisement culture.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY NADIA LEE COHEN
You can find it all in photographer Nadia Lee Cohen’s work. Cult American movies, TV ads, degenerate culture, glamorous, artificial and provocative female characters are in Cohen’s field of vision. Her work debunks the post-50’s imposed perfect female role and image, recreating familiar scenes through a different storyline. The females in these stories portray profiles that navigate between courage and fragility. Lonely women, with imperfect forms and impeccable make-up, posing in domestic settings – gobbling up fast food opposite the TV screen, posing with a handset or reading a romance novel under the sun…
Born in the UK in 1990, Cohen finished London College of Fashion in 2012. Her works got recognition at a young age after coming home with the National Portrait Gallery’s prestigious Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize the same year. In 2014, Procter & Gamble sponsored Lee to travel to America to shoot. This journey inspired her 100 Naked Women series, which brought her international acclaim. The time she spent in LA five years ago was very influential in the development of her visual language. Lured by imperfect faces in strange, uncanny settings, Cohen finds inspiration in the people she knows or has encountered in LA and the UK. Cohen admits that the UK is more tolerant towards differences. Her eyes light up when she sees someone who does not conform to the universal understanding of beauty. She is naturally lured towards people with unusual physical features. Or as she puts it, she enjoys recreating these cherished characters.
