CHIAROSCURO OF THE SOUL

MEET THE ARTIST

An enormous, seemingly impeccable, flamboyant space. The intense use of light. Smooth surfaces, emptiness and characters that appear out of place. Jaime Welsh’s photographs instantly arouse an uncanny sense of curiosity.

Welsh chooses settings that reveal the moods of his characters. These include government offices, medical clinics, museums, university campuses or any other place governed by strict rules. Places that provide a sterile, yet comforting setting to the subjects are the ideal choice. The models are usually positioned at the centre of these vast spaces - their facial expressions often reveal apprehension, anxiety, fear or daydreaming.

Although the mood never allows you to look them straight in the eye, they have something more than a physical presence. There is something in that look, but we will never know exactly what it is. It does not matter how long you study Welsh’s photographs, it is still hard to answer this question: is the extreme anxiety inherent in the images revealed in the character through the staging of the space, or is it something hard to define, that is impossible to detect in the eyes of the character, that makes these plainly-staged spaces feel so anxious?
