The notoriously tight-lipped auteur David Lynch is well known for his taciturn style. Unless, that is, the topic turns to his one true love: transcendental meditation.

Exploring the dark side of human nature is no easy business. Nothing can exist without its opposite, and in order to be able to delve into the elusive world of human psychology, a sense of lightness is crucial. The distinctive retro-avant-garde sensibility which Lynch is best associated with has been on full display in his work since the early 90s.
What is the connection between meditation and motivation?
Each one of us human beings has a treasury within. This treasury has many names, but it is one eternal field. It is found at the base of all matter and all mind. It is a field of pure fullness of consciousness. And this consciousness has qualities - all positive. So the field of consciousness within is at the same time a field of unbounded intelligence, unbounded creativity, unbounded bliss, unbounded love, unbounded energy, and unbounded peace. Every time a human being transcends and truly experiences this treasury within, they infuse some outwards and begin to expand the consciousness they already had. The side effect of expanding consciousness is that negativity begins to lift away. So things like traumatic stress, anxiety, tension, sadness, depression, hate, anger, a need for revenge, and fear start to lift away. This alone gives a human being the feeling of so much freedom when that heavy weight of negativity starts to lift. So I always say with Transcendental Meditation you’ve got gold coming in from within, and garbage going out. As far as motivation goes; motivation, it seems to me, is a mixture of the great appreciation of something, a great happiness connected with “doing”, and energy. All the ingredientsfor increased motivation lie within.
You have been meditating for more than 40 years. What would you advise your younger self if you could send them a message from today?
Get TM and stay regular in its practice.
As human beings we sometimes look in the mirror and focus on our flaws. It is so important to see and appreciate what we do love about ourselves, our body, and our whole being. What do you love most about yourself right now, and why?
Mainly my stud appeal.
What do you think about dreams?
I’ve always said that I don’t usually get ideas from my dreams at night, but I love to daydream to catch ideas, and I love dream logic.
