PHOTOGRAPY BY OUKA LEELE
TEXT BY DAMLA KELLECİOĞLU
In Ouka Leele’s world, photography is distanced from its conventional mission of copying/recreating reality. Instead, photographs take on the role of sketches, acting as the base of a painting. Much like early 20th century surrealists, she applies saturated and striking colours – frequently watercolour – on her black and white photographs. According to the artist who also incorporates mises-en-scène in her work, “painting is seeking the image in the photograph.”
